Ageing and Frailty: International Study and Seminar

In October, a two-day seminar entitled ‘Ageing and frailty in Norway and Russia’ was held by HSE University’s International Laboratory for Population and Health.  In addition to purely demographic results concerning the changing age structure of the population and growing life expectancy, most presentations were devoted to the comparative assessment of physical and cognitive status among elderly people, cardiovascular aging, as well as social and medical support for the elderly. We spoke with the organizers and participants of the seminar about their research findings and the implications for society and public health.

On October 15, 2021, the International Laboratory for Population and Health of the Higher School of Economics (NRU HSE), together with colleagues from the Northern State Medical University (NSMU) and the  Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH), held a seminar "Using eHealth data for informed decision-making and increased quality of health care in Russia”.

International seminar "Ageing and frailty in Norway and Russia"

Seminar October 12-13th 2021, Moscow, Russia
With this 2-day seminar, brought together scholars in the field of ageing and frailty for knowledge sharing and networking. Building on the International project on cardiovascular disease in Russia (IPCDR) and the Know Your Heart (KYH) study, we have initiated a project focusing on early ageing in Russia and Norway. The project is lead by Senior Scientist Bjørn Heine Strand at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH), and the project team consists of Dr. Alexander Kudryavtsev, Northern State Medical University (NSMU), coordinator of Heart to Heart collaboration Dr. Laila Hopstock (UiT The Arctic University of Norway), and principal investigator of IPCDR Prof. David Leon, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) / National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE University). The seminar combined of an online and a physical meeting. It is kindly hosted by the HSE University in Moscow with the assistance of Dr. Vladimir Shkolnikov, Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) and HSE University.  The seminar was held in a mixed format.

Webinar "The issues of temporal consistency of cause-of-death data within the ICD-10 period"

On May 13, the regular seminar of the Modern Demography series was held. At the seminar, Inna Daniliva (Research Fellow of the International laboratory for population and health NRU HSE, Research Scientist of the Laboratory of demographic data of Max Planck Institute for demographic research) the topic "The issues of temporal consistency of cause-of-death data within the ICD-10 period"

Webinar "Studies on the migration of researchers and the academic life course using bibliometric data"

On March 4, the regular seminar of the Modern Demography series was held. At the seminar, Samin Aref (research scientist, Laboratory of Digital and Computational Demography, Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Germany) presented "Studies on the migration of researchers and the academic life course using bibliometric data"

Webinar "The Short-term Mortality Fluctuations: A new data collection of weekly mortality data"

On July 23, the regular seminar of the Modern Demography series was held. At the seminar, László Németh (research scientist, Laboratory of Demographic Data, Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Germany) and Ainhoa Alustiza Galarza (research assistant, Laboratory of Demographic Data, Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Germany) presented the recently established Short-term Mortality Fluctuations (STMF) data series.

Webinar "Challenges in interpreting the mortality impact of COVID-19"

On April 24, the regular seminar of the Modern Demography series was held. At the seminar, David A. Leon (Chief Research Fellow at the HSE University; Professor of Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine; Adjunct Professor at the UiT The Arctic University of Norway) presented the report "Challenges in interpreting the mortality impact of COVID-19".

Webinar "COVID-19: A Quantitative Assessment of the Pandemic and its Impact on Mortality"

The coronavirus pandemic has spread to almost all countries of the world and by early April 2020 the number of confirmed cases of the disease has exceeded a million milestone. In terms of the impact on the political and economic situation in the world and on people's minds, what is happening has no analogs over the past decades. However, can we reliably quantify this phenomenon? Oddly enough, despite the presence of a huge amount of easily accessible data on the Internet, the quantitative characteristics of the pandemic remain problematic even in economically developed countries. The presentation examined the key points regarding the quality and comparability of COVID-19 cases and deaths, as well as some additional options for objectively measuring the impact of the epidemic on mortality.
