The researches of the International Laboratory for Population and Health at the XXIV Yasin (April) International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development
On April 4, researchers of the International Laboratory of Population and Health presented the results of their work at the XXIV Yasin (April) International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development.
Papers prepared by the Laboratory staff were presented in the section "P. Demography and Labour Markets". At the session "P-4-4. Questions of the Study of Fertility" researcher Elena Churilova gave a presentation on "Get married and have a child: a variety of ways to realize births", made in co-authorship with Olga Rodina, research intern of the laboratory, and Sergey Zakharov (Institute of Demography, HSE University). Olga Rodina also presented the second study "Financial well-being and reproductive intentions in a situation of increasing uncertainty in 2020", conducted together with Ekaterina Mitrofanova (HSE University) and Veronika Kraynova (HSE University. At the next session, "P-4-5. The Factor of Seasonality in Demographic Processes" the results of his work under the scientific supervision of Sergey Timonin were reported by Mikhail Maksimenko (NRU HSE) ("Excess Mortality in Cities and Regions of European Russia During 2010 Heatwave", also co-authored by N.V. Shartova (NRU HSE), Mikhail Varentsov).
The session "P-4-4. Questions of the Study of Fertility" was opened by Olga Rodina and her colleagues. Their work attempted to examine how far housing and reproductive intentions correlate with each other (and what determines them apart from that), and whether COVID-19 has any influence on them.
Elena Churilova's report examined the dynamics of the spread of premarital and extramarital conception and changes in the intervals between marriage and childbirth. According to the author, this late-Soviet pattern of behavior (mass "shotgun marriages" or conceiving a child in the first year of marriage) has been replaced by a variety of ways to fulfill reproductive intentions.
The first day of the demographic section closed with a session devoted to the seasonality of demographic processes, and the work of Mikhail Maksimenko, Sergei Timonin, and colleagues stood out for its methodological accuracy and the complexity of the analysis methods used. The purpose of their study was to evaluate the impact of the summer heat of 2010 on the growth of mortality in the European part of Russia and to study its spatial patterns.
The speeches of the staff of the International Laboratory of Population and Health, as well as other speakers were received with lively interest and were accompanied by questions from the listeners.
