Impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the dynamics of life expectancy

On December 15, 2022, the International Laboratory for Population and Health and Human Capital Multidisciplinary Research Center held the seminar “Impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the dynamics of life expectancy".

In 2022, the Covid-19 pandemic began slowly receding. However, in 2020-21 the demographers have counted the huge number of excess deaths caused by pandemic. The WHO estimates the global number of excess deaths associated with COVID-19 at 14.9 million (95% CI: 13.3, 16.6). An even larger number of excess deaths occurred based on the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) estimates of 18.2 million (95% CI: 17.1, 19.6). The UN estimates that the mortality caused by the pandemic led to a global decline in life expectancy, which happened for the first time after 1950 (the period from which UN estimates exist). However, the impact of the pandemic varied widely across countries and over time. The seminar discussed the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the health and life expectancy of the population. Particular attention was paid to Russia as the country that suffered one of the most significant losses in life expectancy in 2020-21.
