Cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality has been declining in Russia for a decade. However, it remains much higher than in most other European countries. This lecture will provide an overview of the design of a multi-disciplinary study set up in 2014 that aims to understand why CVD mortality is so high in Russia, and what can be done to further reduce the burden of this major contributor to Russia’s low life expectancy at birth. The International Project on Cardiovascular Disease in Russia (IPCDR) involves cardiologists, epidemiologists, demographers, public health specialists, sociologists and forensic experts. It includes in depth studies of the way in which cardiovascular disease is put as an underlying cause of death, aetiological and clinical examination surveys of random samples of 4500 people from two Russian cities and detailed work on treatment of people with cardiovascular disease. The lecture will report some preliminary findings and discuss how researchers will be able to access these data for their own work in the future.
