The International Laboratory for Population and Health at the HSE cordially invites you to the next session of the scientific seminar "Modern Demography," which will be held on March 5, 2020 at 16:00. Our speaker is Evgeny M. Andreev, Candidate of Science, Head of the International laboratory for population and health at HSE

Abstract

The infant mortality rate in Russia is significantly higher than it would be expected in view of the number of measures taken to protect the health of pregnant women and newborns. Despite the relatively rapid decline in infant mortality in recent years, it remains higher than in most European countries with reliable demographic statistics.
It is known that social inequality slows the decline in mortality. In Russia, the infant mortality rate among children born by women with higher education is more than two times lower that among children of women without higher education. Differences between educational groups are determined by causes of death classified as "Certain conditions originating in the perinatal period”. " The contribution of congenital malformations and other causes of death from the class "Congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities" is also high (the same causes of death caused the lag of Russia).
In modern society causes of death from chapter " Certain conditions originating in the perinatal period " are preventable causes of death, mortality from which is absent in condition of appropriate medical care. So, it might be assumed that different educational groups have unequal access to high-quality health care. This assumption deserves special study.
We can also argue that the level of medical care for pregnant and newborn women in Russia is still lower than in developed countries in Europe.
